Dinah and Tania are the authors of Dynamic Breathing for Asthma, and Breathe, Stretch, Move: How to Beat Workplace Stress. Dinah is also the author of the bestselling Hyperventilation Syndrome: Breathing Pattern Disorders and Tania co-authored Breathing Matters with Dr Jim Bartley and the acclaimed  Breathe To Succeed .
Tania

  • Currently sits on the Medical Advisory Board for Allergy New Zealand.
  • Is a recognised practitioner For the NZ Academy of Sport
  • Is a preferred provider for The Pinnacle group, a sports organisation which helps aspiring world champions.
NB: There is so much more to just breathing in and out.

Breathing therapies for asthma and allergy:

In recent years, asthma patients have been well informed about their drug
management but little emphasis has been placed on physical coping skills and the importance of the correct use of the breathing muscles. Dependency on asthma medication is regarded as the norm, and there is little encouragement for people with asthma to try alternative methods to control their breathing.

Approximately 70% of people with asthma breathe with difficulty and without using their full breathing potential, so this service is invaluable to those individuals. Their BradCliff Method of breathing retraining adds value to basic asthma education, by looking at the mechanics of breathing patterns and the muscles involved not just the airways and medication use.
The BradCliff Breathing Method is also an excellent technique for helping with anxiety and the difficulty in breathing brought on by an allergic reaction.

It’s time to raise the bar on breathing!

Noon Dr. Debbie Fewtrell

Dr Debbie Fewtrell - MB ChB, Dip Obs, FRNZCGP, FACNEM

Dr Fewtrell has an integrative medical practice specialising in the  nutritional and biomedical treatment of children with allergies, immune,  learning and behaviour problems. She also teaches and mentors Australasian biomedical practitioners. Her work  has been regularly featured in the NZ media most recently with the “What’s really in our food” documentary.

Debbie’s strong focus is to inspire and educate parents and professionals in Australasia to use  integrative biomedical approaches ( ie a combination of mainstream, nutritional and natural  medicine)  to improve the health and neurological function of children. She is a Pfeiffer and DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) trained physician and a fellow of Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental medicine.

What’s really in our food?

Allergies and sensitivities to foods  are relatively well understood but  the possible  reactions to  some natural and artificial food chemicals  are not.

One in three children is affected by   Allergy , ADHD , ADD, a behaviour disorder, a learning disorder,  dyslexia , Autism spectrum disorders or asthma? Why are these conditions so much more prevalent than a generation ago?  Does our current diet explain some of the increases we have seen?

Do you think your child may be reacting to some food colours but can’t seem to work out which one?  Do you wheeze after some wines? Is your child’s behaviour sometimes best described as “Jekyll and Hide”? Do you get headaches after some chinese food? Are you confused or concerned about MSG, Aspartame, food colourings, preservatives, flavours - listen to the research  and learn some  shocking statistics!

Become informed about additives used in NZ , learn how to read labels and then how to identify  and  eliminate the worst offenders for optimal health.

Dr Fewtrell will explain how  changing  the diet can  help behaviour and the immune system and how biomedical approaches can help “sensitive” children by  addressing some of the core underpinning issues in the body rather than being  predominantly reliant on drugs to treat symptoms.

This lecture will appeal to anyone with an interest in a healthier diet, particularly parents.

Even good food can make you sick!

Allergies and sensitivities  can have unusual and wide-reaching effects on the body and not all of them can be identified easily, they don’t show up on regular lab tests, or they may be hard to pinpoint because it wasn’t what you ate for breakfast this morning  - you had it yesterday and you were fine!

Many chronic health problems can arise from consuming foods that your body doesn’t want - you may experience lethargy, or fatigue, migraine, depression, skin problems, fluid retention, even joint pains.  The ingestion of allergenic foods can also affect the neurophysiology of a person, impacting emotions, memory and behaviour.  And what’s worse, you may crave the very foods that are causing the problems.

Functional food allergies and sensitivities can be difficult to pin-point.  This talk will cover some of the ways to (or not to) pinpoint your allergies and the benefits to be gained from eliminating those foods from your life!

4:00pm Janet de Witt

Janet de Witt - B.TchLn. P. Grad Dip. Ed., Dip.E.H.C, Dip. TE.S.S.O.L., Reg. Ed. Kinesiologist.

Janet has a passion for enhancing learning and empowering the learner.
Following 25 years teaching experience, mostly in special education as a RTLB (resource teacher of learning and behaviour), she  now runs a specialist clinic using Educational and Developmental Kinesiology  , Brain Gym/Vision gym and developmental  movements to support  more efficient learning in a child and  treat developmental blocks which hinder the child’s progress.
Janet both  runs workshops  showing  parents, and teachers  how to use  Brain Gym® movements as well as working in her clinic  with children who  are experiencing difficulty with coordination, focusing, acquiring reading and writing skills  or those children who want to enhance sport or artistic performance skills.  Individuals with ADD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia and ASD can find this process enables them to move forward.

Taking the lid off learning difficulties – Is it just a school problem?

Only when we ask WHY? , can we start to put in place effective support for children  who are struggling. Many schools provide strategies, programmes and extra support in relation to their resources and assessment of the learning difficulty but is that sufficient to address the core reasons why the child is having problems?.   Often we need to explore whether the child is  actually equipped with the physical, visual and auditory skills to succeed at school. What can the school provide  and what else is there out there to explore to support your child?

11am Glen White

Glenn White - BSc, MSc, MBIBH

Glenn White was a lifelong asthma sufferer until completing a Buteyko course in 2000, and has been asthma and drug free ever since.  He turned his back on a 25 year career in gold exploration to train as a practitioner and now teaches and promotes this revolutionary approach to health and wellness.

In seven years Glenn has helped over 1,200 people overcome breathing related disorders including asthma, allergies, hay fever, chronic bronchitis, stress related conditions, panic attacks, snoring, sleep apnoea and chronic fatigue.

Glenn has spoken at numerous conferences both nationally and internationally and was part of a group of four practitioners that travelled to Havana, Cuba in 2004 to train 14 practitioners and teach Buteyko to 200 asthmatic children. Glenn’s work has attracted media interest including a feature on New Zealand television in 2006.

Glenn is committed to helping reduce the burden of breathing disorders like asthma in New Zealand and worldwide. www.buteykocourses.com

Allergies and asthma ….is it your breathing?

While management of asthma and allergies has been primarily focused on drug therapy there is an increasing body of research demonstrating the effectiveness of breathing therapies. The best studied and most effective of these is the Buteyko Method. Medication reduction and safety of the Buteyko Method have now been demonstrated in seven clinical trials for asthma including two in New Zealand.

Buteyko Institute breathing therapist, Glenn White, will explain how dysfunctional breathing can lead to conditions including asthma, allergies, hay fever and eczema. He will show how these and many other breathing related disorders respond positively, often dramatically with the normalisation of the breathing pattern. The session will include a demonstration of Buteyko exercises, breathing assessments and guidelines to start getting immediate benefits from healthy breathing.  Find out if you are a healthy breather.

You will reconsider everything you thought you knew about breathing and health.

Allergies - a different perspective

Traditional Chinese medicine has recognised allergies for the last 5000 years.

In the traditional Chinese model, allergy is seen as an internal imbalance which is expressed as disease and can result in inflammation, such as atopic eczema.  Allergies may arise from what you inherit (constitutional) or what you acquire through lifestyle and diet.  Therefore it is the person who is treated, not the disease.

Every week in clinical practice I use acupuncture, herbs and dietary therapy to treat allergic conditions.

This paper discusses the following:
- A Chinese world-view of health and medicine
- A traditional Chinese medicine view of allergy
- Treatment of allergies using Chinese medicine – food, acupuncture and herbal medicine

Medical Herbalist
Registered Naturopath
Natural Fertility Consultant
Homeobotanical Therapist

DIRECTOR
House of Health Herne Bay

Kirsten graduated with honours from Wellpark college of Natural
therapies with double diploma’s in Naturopathy & Herbalism. Prior to completing her studies Kirsten was asked to become part of the team at one of NZ’s largest practitioner only companies as a practitioner support consultant. This enabled her to learn a great level of information on the latest scientific evidence in natural medicines and how to apply this to get the best clinical results for her clients.

Kirsten continued her studies and completed post graduate qualifications in Natural Fertility & reproductive care & Homeobotanical therapy.

Since leaving Pacific Health Kirsten has successfully run her own
private practice, consulted to natural health companies, taught
graduating students at Wellpark & relished every moment. Being a mother Kirsten is able to understand the demands of family time and the practical aspects of supporting a family wellbeing. As a mother of a child with allergies she has witnessed the amazing impact of undertsanding what foods trigger the symptoms and being able to alleviate them when they arrive using natural medicines.

Kirsten has developed a passion for allergy work after regularly seeing a correlation between food, food allergies & their impact on health. In clinic it is very important as allergies are so prevalent & experience has taught her how to use natural medicines effectively  to support people to be more comfortable. The key is finding out what the food culprits are and developing strategies that take each individuals needs
into consideration. Kirsten is constantly astounded at the massive
variety of symptoms that people get relief from once they are able to identify the foods, eliminate them from their diet and work at reprogramming the body to moderate it's response to allergenic foods.

As a clinical Naturopath Kirsten helps people using the following
services:
Naturopathy, Medical Herbalism Homeobotanical Therapy, Flower essences Homeopathy, Nutrition & appropriate testing methodologies. Kirsten is a big fan of ELISA Delayed IgG allergy testing through US BioTek labs in the US.
