Allergies in New Zealand
New Zealand has coloquially been referred to as "The Allergy Capital of the World". Allergic Conditions are reported to be one of the most common reasons for visits to a doctor in New Zealand. Patient visits to allergy clinics have increased in the last two years, in some cases with a waiting list of up to eight months.
Allergy New Zealand has reported an increase from about 7 500 inquiries in 1998 to more than 100 000 in 2002.
It is estimated that 1 in 6 New Zealanders have asthma. Approximately 70-80% of asthma in New Zealand is reportedly associated with an allergy and results in approximately $825 million being spent on treatment.
It is estimated that 90 000 New Zealanders suffer from some form of food allergy and over 500 000 suffer from pollen allergies.
